Bermuda/Zoysia Dormancy Tips

It's fall and most warm season grasses (bermuda, zoysia, centipede) are starting to go dormant. Here are a few tips to keep in mind:

* Do not mow it too short, to protect it from winter kill. Keep it a 2.5 inches. During the summer months it's okay to mow it at 2". Raise it 1/2" inch for the cooler months.

* Although you won't have to water too much, make sure the soil doesn't get powder dry.

* Your lawns will not need to be treated unless you start noticing annual bluegrass, also known as Poa annual. (photo below)

It's a very prolific cool-season weed and it spreads very quickly. It can be a nuisance if left untreated.

* December through February, try to remove excessive lawn debris (rocks, sticks, leaves) to ensure proper greenup in the spring.

* Don't forget to winterize your irrigation systems and remove backflow units. These should be wrapped in a towel and stored indoors, to avoid any damage to the cast iron mechanisms. Most garages are not insulated and some cracking might occur.
